As we turn the corner into a new year, it tends to invite reminiscing on the various events of the past year as well as thoughts and goals for the upcoming twelve months. “Traditional” intentions come to mind: exercise more, eat healthier, spend more time in nature and and and… These, though a tad banal, are still wonderful gifts to give ourselves in the interest of overall health and well-being.
What I would like to offer as an addition to the typical list of ‘new year shoulds’ is this: Authenticity. No matter what other new roads you may choose to travel as we round this bend (or old familiar ones that are still working for you) the goal of honoring the truth of YOU is in my estimation, without doubt the most benevolent practice you could instill in your life.
Living from the genuineness of our hearts celebrates not only the true nature of who we are, but offers respect to those sharing our lives as well.
There are many reasons for skirting this authenticity, the top one being fear. This fear is the offspring of many different parents… “What would happen if I take this step?” “What might others think?” “What if it’s the ‘wrong’ decision?” We may often suppress our desires because we fear the impact it may have on others in our lives. This sadly, though in many cases leads only to resentment as we deny our own deepest wishes.
As the years speed steadily by and the realization that life is indeed short becomes even more pronounced, there has never been a more important time to truly listen to the truth within you. Why live a facade? Honor you. Honor others BY honoring you. And as you flow in this amazing river of authenticity, watch the magic begin to happen. It’s your life. In 2012. In this moment. Now. Be the magnificent being you have come here to be.
Happy New Year and beyond.
